Google Discontinues Showcase Payments to Pressure Media for AI Training Authorization

According to Beating, Google is discontinuing its Showcase program and conditioning continued licensing payments on media outlets' agreement to authorize content for AI model training, the monitoring platform reported recently. The Showcase project previously provided annual fees to publishers for featuring articles on Google News and driving referral traffic. Google's new AI pilot project requires participating media to license their content for training large language models, which will power AI-generated summaries on Google News and Gemini. The Washington Post and The Guardian have joined the pilot as initial partners. Media companies have expressed concerns that reduced Google referral traffic makes the deal less valuable, with some considering blocking Google's web crawlers entirely.
