Homeplus Halts All Stores, Faces Bankruptcy Choice by July 16 as 1.08 Trillion Won in Public Claims Awaits Protection

According to E-Daily, Homeplus announced on July 13 that it halted operations at all stores nationwide due to complete operational fund depletion, unable to cover supplier payments, electricity, and water bills. The company said it would determine whether to resume operations by July 20, the deadline for immediate appeal against the Seoul Rehabilitation Court's decision to terminate its rehabilitation procedure made on July 3 due to failure to secure 200 billion won in required operating funds. Market observers expect Homeplus may file for bankruptcy instead of appealing, seeking a "linked bankruptcy" process to protect public claims—including unpaid employee salaries, vendor payments, and taxes—totaling approximately 1.08 trillion won as of end-June. Filing before July 20 would ensure these claims retain priority status in bankruptcy proceedings; missing the deadline risks mixing them with general creditor claims, potentially disadvantaging small suppliers and employees.
