Hong Kong Exchanges and HKMA Launch Digital Hong Kong Dollar Pilot for Derivatives After-Hours Trading

According to Odaily, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) and Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced on June 18 a joint pilot project to explore digital payment solutions for after-hours trading in the derivatives market. The pilot will introduce the digital Hong Kong dollar—a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) operating on a 24/7 basis—to settle initial margin payments for after-hours derivative trades, enhancing risk management capabilities while maintaining current operational processes.
