According to CoinDesk, Japan's largest card network JCB signed a memorandum of understanding with US-based stablecoin issuer Circle on July 14 to explore the use of USDC for cross-border payments and merchant transactions. The partnership will begin with a proof of concept for JCB's internal fund transfers and study USDC adoption for lower-cost remittances and in-store payments for merchants serving foreign visitors. JCB has over 175 million cardmembers and 71 million merchants worldwide. The collaboration reflects growing interest in stablecoin-based settlement in Japan, with Circle's separate partnership with Nomura pointing to potential service launches as early as 2027.
