Junior Developer Jobs Down 19% Since 2022 as AI Tools Attract Non-Traditional Coders

According to Laurie Voss, npm co-founder, research from Stanford University's Digital Economy Lab shows junior software developer employment (ages 22-25) declined 19% since late 2022, with entry-level positions falling 28% from peak. Meanwhile, overall U.S. developer employment grew 4.4% in the same period, driven by a 14% surge in senior developers (ages 41-49). Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows computer programmer roles dropped 16% year-over-year, while data scientist and core software developer positions grew 12% and 2% respectively.

AI tool adoption fueled a surge in code creation: GitHub added a record 36 million accounts and 121 million repositories last year, while Apple App Store submissions jumped 80% year-over-year in Q1 2026. Vercel and Lovable platforms report over 60% of new users are non-traditional coders like product managers and analysts. Job listing data from Indeed indicates entry-level demand bottomed in May 2025 and has begun recovering.
