Michael Burry Discloses Short Positions on NVDA, AMAT, Semiconductor ETF; SOXX Falls 12% Last Week

According to Business Insider, investor Michael Burry disclosed new short positions on NVDA, AMAT, CAT, TSLA, SOXX, and MU on his Substack newsletter last week, with the announcement triggering sharp market sell-offs. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) declined 12% within two trading days, while Applied Materials fell 17%, Micron dropped 15%, and NVDA retreated nearly 3%. Caterpillar lost 11% over the same period, and Tesla fell 6% despite reporting strong second-quarter delivery growth. Wealth Club Chief Investment Strategist Susannah Streeter described the phenomenon as "a mirror image of the Buffett Effect," where Burry's short disclosures trigger profit-taking among investors aware of his skill in identifying bubbles. AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould noted Burry's short positions suggest he expects AI investment returns to disappoint, potentially causing oversupply and inventory buildups across the AI supply chain.
