New York Halts Large Data Center Construction, Affecting Facilities Using 50 Megawatts or More on July 14

According to BlockBeats, New York Gov. Hochul signed an order on July 14 halting new mega-scale data center construction, effective immediately. The ban applies to facilities consuming 50 megawatts or more of electricity.

According to Fortune, the U.S. AI data center expansion has driven public electricity costs significantly higher. PJM, which oversees the electrical grid for 14 states in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions, estimates that new data center electricity demand will add approximately $23 billion in costs to power users through at least the end of 2028.
