NHTSA Removes Mandatory Brake Pedal Requirement for Fully Autonomous Vehicles

According to Bloomberg and TechCrunch, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) plans to revise the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) to eliminate the requirement for fully autonomous vehicles to be equipped with brake pedals designed for human drivers. The move aims to reduce regulatory barriers for autonomous robotaxis including Tesla's Cybercab and Waymo. NHTSA stated the proposal modernizes vehicle safety standards while emphasizing that removing the brake pedal requirement does not relax braking safety standards, which remain strictly enforced.
