OpenAI Faces Multi-State Investigation and Suicide Lawsuit as IPO Plans Advance

According to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, OpenAI recently came under joint investigation by multiple U.S. state attorneys general, with the New York State Attorney General's office leading the effort. Subpoenas request documents on user engagement, advertising strategies, data handling, and protections for minors and elderly users, as well as the company's oversight of large language model behavior and safety policies.

The investigation comes as OpenAI prepares for an IPO with a reported valuation potentially reaching $1 trillion. Separately, a Canadian mother, Kristie Carrier, filed a lawsuit in California alleging that ChatGPT failed to adequately address her 24-year-old daughter Alice Carrier's repeated suicidal ideation, ultimately contributing to the daughter's death. OpenAI stated it has continuously updated safety measures and works with mental health experts to improve crisis response capabilities.
