Philadelphia Semiconductor Index Surges 81% in Q2, Largest Gain on Record, as Volatility Spikes

According to Jin10, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 81% in the second quarter ending June 30, putting it on pace for its best quarter on record. The semiconductor sector vastly outpaced the Nasdaq-100, which gained 25%, and the S&P 500, which rose 14% during the same period. However, last week's selloff highlighted growing concerns, with the index plunging 7.9%—its largest single-week decline since April 2025—and Monday saw extreme swings, ranging from a 3.2% drop to a 3.8% gain. According to Cantor Fitzgerald senior managing director CJ Muse, market participants are now questioning whether the artificial intelligence infrastructure investment trend can be sustained beyond 2026.
