South Korea Covered Call ETF Market Surges 30-Fold to 26.4 Trillion Won in 3 Years

According to Hana Securities, South Korea's covered call ETF market reached 26.4 trillion won on July 25, expanding 30-fold since 2023 as surging market volatility drives investor demand for income-focused strategies. The market, which stood at only 800 billion won three years ago, now comprises 61 products spanning semiconductors and high-dividend stocks. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) volatility index averaged above 80 in July, exceeding pandemic-era peaks, making covered call strategies increasingly attractive.

The trend has spurred development of active-managed covered call ETFs that flexibly adjust option-selling ratios to capture upside participation while maintaining downside protection. Traditional strategies typically limit upside gains to 41-58% of underlying index moves; newer active variants, such as those launched domestically in 2026, aim to improve this participation rate through dynamic hedging.
