South Korea's Central Bank Digital Currency 'Hangang Plan' Phase 2 to Launch as Early as September

According to Yonhap News, South Korea's central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot project 'Hangang Plan' Phase 2 is expected to launch as early as September 2026. The Bank of Korea and commercial banks are conducting final preparations for real deposit token transaction testing. Phase 1, conducted from April to June last year, saw 81,000 participants conduct 114,880 transactions via e-wallets. Phase 2 will shift focus to commercialization. Additionally, South Korea's Ministry of Economy and Finance announced plans to pilot government bond tokenization linked to the central bank's institutional CBDC starting next year.
