South Korea's KOSPI Plunges 6%, Falls Below 6,800 on July 16 as Semiconductor Stocks Tumble

According to Edaily, South Korea's KOSPI index fell 6.17% today (July 16), closing at 6,835 after declining as much as 7.6% intraday to hit 6,730. The KOSDAQ index also dropped 4.28%, breaking below the 800-point level at 793.7. Semiconductor heavyweights Samsung Electronics declined 7.87% and SK Hynix fell 11.34%, pressured by concerns over artificial intelligence infrastructure investment delays. The sharp declines triggered sell-side circuit breakers twice: the KOSPI sell-side circuit breaker activated at 9:10 AM and the KOSDAQ version at 10:20 AM, marking the 19th and 9th occurrences this year respectively.
