Two-Tier Talent Model Emerges in AI Era: Top 1% Experts and High-Agency Generalists, Says Stanford's Li Fei-Fei

According to Guru Club, on June 22, Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li and David Rogier, CEO of MasterClass, discussed the future workplace in an AI era during a podcast appearance. Both highlighted the importance of agency—the ability to proactively engage with and master technology. Rogier outlined an emerging barbell structure within companies: one end features top-tier experts specializing at the top 1% level, while the other comprises high-agency generalists capable of multitasking, strong judgment, and knowing when to collaborate with specialists. The middle tier of workers performing only standard tasks faces the most pressure. Li concurred, noting that both ends require agency to leverage tools—experts to amplify their depth, and generalists to transcend past capability limits.
