UK Car Production Rises 2.7% in May on US Export Surge, Ending Four-Month Decline

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), UK automotive production rose 2.7% year-on-year in May to 51,178 units, ending four consecutive months of decline, driven by increased exports to the United States. Passenger car output climbed 3.2% to 49,249 units, while commercial vehicle production fell 7.6% to 1,929 units. US-bound car exports surged 83.1% month-on-month, but exports to the EU and China dropped 5.2% and 14.3%, respectively. SMMT CEO Mike Hawes noted that manufacturers are investing billions in zero-emission technology, but weak underlying demand and rising compliance costs pose risks to competitiveness and investment.
