United Airlines Q2 Earnings Beat Estimates, But $6 Billion in Added Fuel Costs Pressure Full Year

United Airlines reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.99 on Wednesday, beating Wall Street's estimate of $1.88, with revenue coming in at $17.67 billion versus $17.61 billion expected. However, surging fuel costs continue to weigh heavily on the airline's profitability. The carrier said fuel expenses could add nearly $6 billion to its 2026 costs compared to initial forecasts, with second-quarter fuel costs jumping 84% year-over-year to $2.3 billion. Jet fuel prices at major U.S. airports have surged 34% in July alone amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. The airline lowered its third-quarter earnings guidance to $2.50-$3.50 per share from analyst expectations of $3.60, citing fuel cost volatility.
