U.S. Congress Adds CBDC Ban to Housing Bill Through December 31, 2030

According to The Block, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives reached a bipartisan agreement on an updated version of the Road to 21st Century Housing Act. The legislation includes a new provision that explicitly prohibits the Federal Reserve from issuing or creating a central bank digital currency (CBDC) or any "substantially similar" digital asset through December 31, 2030. The Trump administration supports the CBDC restriction, with Treasury Secretary Bessent previously stating that CBDC is "not under consideration." The bill will undergo Senate procedural voting before being submitted to the House for review following the congressional recess, and then sent to the president for signature.
