U.S. Mint to Strike 1-Dollar Coins Featuring Trump Image for 250th Anniversary

According to PANews, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent on July 15 announced the U.S. Mint will begin striking 1-dollar commemorative coins featuring President Trump's image to mark America's 250th anniversary. The coin's obverse displays "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "1776-2026," while the reverse features a bald eagle. Trump called the coin an honor.

However, critics have questioned the coin's legality. A 2020 federal law authorizing the commemorative coins explicitly prohibits images of living persons. Bessent cited a 1923 precedent in which President Calvin Coolidge's image appeared on commemorative coins, arguing that the restriction applies only to currency issued by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, not coins minted by the U.S. Mint.
