The US government reportedly requires OpenAI to release the latest model GPT-5.6 in stages.

Jinse Finance reports that on June 26, according to a person familiar with the matter, the Trump administration asked OpenAI to release a powerful upcoming AI model in stages. This comes less than two weeks after the company's competitor, Anthropic PBC, suspended access to its cutting-edge model due to regulatory pressure. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussion was not public, said that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees on Wednesday that the US government requested the company to first release GPT-5.6 to a small group of trusted partners before rolling it out to more users. The person said that Altman stated during an employee meeting that the US government is growing increasingly concerned about the performance of cutting-edge models. He emphasized that even if OpenAI disagrees, it needs to cooperate with the Trump administration's suggestions regarding safety and restrictions on the latest model. The person said Altman did not explicitly mention the Anthropic incident.
