Grayscale filed an S-3 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this Wednesday, announcing plans to convert its Zcash Trust into a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF).

If approved, this move would create the first ETF linked to a privacy coin, marking another major milestone in the institutionalization of the cryptocurrency market.

01 Major Breakthrough: Grayscale Targets Privacy Coin ETF

Every step Grayscale takes in the crypto world draws significant attention. This time, the firm is turning its focus to privacy protection.

The leading crypto asset management company has officially filed documents with the SEC, seeking to convert the Grayscale Zcash Trust into a spot ETF.

The trust plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange Arca, aiming to provide investors with easy exposure to ZEC, just like trading stocks, without the need to directly hold the digital asset.

According to the official filing, "The investment objective of the trust is for the value of its shares to reflect the value of the ZEC held by the trust, less the trust’s fees and other liabilities."

02 Outstanding Performance: Zcash’s Strong Market Showing

ZEC has delivered impressive market performance recently, which is likely a key reason behind Grayscale’s timing for this application.

At the time of writing, the ZEC price has reached $519.62, surging more than 50% over the past 30 days, and posting a staggering 1,050% gain over the last 12 months.

This performance far outpaces Bitcoin’s approximately 28.5% growth over the same period, and has also outperformed Ethereum, exchange tokens, and most "store-of-value" assets.

Beyond price action, Zcash’s on-chain data is equally noteworthy. As of late October 2025, Zcash’s shielded pool supply hit a record 4.5 million ZEC, representing about 27.5% of the total supply.

In just the past three weeks, over 1 million ZEC have been shielded, indicating that long-term accumulation—rather than short-term speculation—is driving the market.

03 Driving Forces: Privacy Coin Revival and Institutional Interest

The privacy coin sector has surged by roughly 120% in 2025, significantly outperforming mainstream crypto assets. Multiple factors are fueling this "privacy coin revival."

Tech investor Naval Ravikant’s comments in early October acted as a direct catalyst, describing Zcash as "insurance against Bitcoin."

This perspective resonated with the market, sending ZEC up more than 60% in 24 hours and lifting the entire privacy coin sector by over 35% for the month.

Institutional investors have also added momentum to the rally. The Grayscale Zcash Trust currently manages over $196 million in assets.

Additionally, Nasdaq-listed Cypherpunk Technologies Inc. continues to increase its ZEC holdings, recently investing another $18 million to purchase 29,869.29 ZEC.

The company’s total holdings now stand at 233,644.56 ZEC, accounting for 1.43% of the entire Zcash network supply. Cypherpunk Technologies plans to eventually hold at least 5% of ZEC’s total supply.

04 Unique Value: Zcash’s Technical Edge

Among privacy coins, Zcash stands out thanks to its distinctive technical features.

Zcash was the first cryptocurrency to develop zero-knowledge encryption technology for private peer-to-peer payments. It utilizes zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge), enabling users to send either fully shielded or transparent transactions within the same network.

This optional privacy model sets Zcash apart from other privacy coins like Monero.

With Monero, every transaction automatically obscures the sender, receiver, and amount. Zcash, on the other hand, allows users to choose whether to enable privacy features based on their needs.

This flexibility not only benefits users but also helps address regulatory concerns. When necessary, users can share transaction data with trusted parties such as auditors or tax authorities using a "viewing key."

05 Regulatory Challenges: Balancing Privacy and Compliance

Privacy coins have always faced regulatory hurdles. The European Union’s new Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) will ban tokens with enhanced anonymity and anonymous crypto accounts starting July 2027.

The U.S. SEC also plans to hold a roundtable on December 15 focused on privacy and financial regulation in the cryptocurrency industry.

However, Zcash’s optional privacy design gives it a certain regulatory advantage. Analysts believe Zcash’s zero-knowledge proof technology bridges the gap between privacy and compliance.

Zcash offers a "privacy without sacrificing transparency" solution, which could help it carve out a niche in a tightly regulated environment.

06 Market Outlook: ETF and Crypto Ecosystem Evolution

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF application is part of a broader trend toward crypto ETFs. Since the SEC first approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, several asset management firms have expanded their offerings to include other cryptocurrencies.

Grayscale has been particularly active, converting several closed-end trusts into exchange-traded products over the past month, including trusts tracking XRP, Dogecoin, and SOL.

Industry experts predict that by the end of 2025, the market could see more than 100 altcoin ETFs.

Sygnum Bank’s "Future of Finance 2025" report confirms this trend, noting that portfolio diversification has overtaken chasing "crypto mega-trends" as the top reason for investing in cryptocurrencies in 2025.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents cited diversification as their primary investment motivation, indicating that crypto is increasingly being used as a core component of investment portfolios.

Looking Ahead

Zcash’s shielded pool now contains over 4.5 million ZEC, representing more than 27.5% of its total supply. For institutional investors, this is not just about privacy—it’s a recognition of a new kind of financial infrastructure.

The future of finance may well lie in the delicate balance between privacy and transparency. As Grayscale’s Zcash ETF application moves forward, the crypto market in 2025 is witnessing a redefinition of money, privacy, and regulation.
