HomeNews* Meta will introduce passkeys as a new login method for Facebook on Android and iOS devices.

  • Passkeys provide a passwordless authentication solution that uses biometrics or device PINs for extra security.
  • The feature is coming soon to Messenger and will allow users to autofill payment information with Meta Pay.
  • Passkeys are designed to prevent phishing and password theft, offering stronger security than traditional passwords or SMS one-time codes.
  • This update follows earlier passkey adoption on WhatsApp, while Instagram support has not yet been announced. Meta announced on June 19, 2025 that it will add support for passkeys—a new passwordless login method—on Facebook for Android and iOS mobile devices. The company aims to make user authentication easier and more secure with this new method.

Users will be able to use passkeys to autofill their payment details when making purchases through Meta Pay. The company stated that passkeys will be available to users “soon.”

Passkeys, as explained by Meta, are a modern way to verify identity using either a device’s biometric features—like fingerprints or facial recognition—or a device lock PIN. “Passkeys are a new way to verify your identity and login to your account that’s easier and more secure than traditional passwords,” the company noted in its official post. This makes it less likely for attackers to steal or guess login credentials through phishing or scam links.

Support for passkeys relies on standards from the FIDO Alliance. This method was previously adopted by WhatsApp on Android in October 2023 and on iOS in April 2024. There is currently no announcement regarding when passkeys will be rolled out for Instagram.

Meta emphasized the increased security offered by passkeys, noting that they resist common cyberattacks such as phishing and password spraying. “Passkeys are an upgrade in security compared to traditional passwords and one-time SMS codes because they are resistant to guessing or theft by malicious websites or scam links,” the company stated.

Other tech companies have also moved toward passwordless solutions. For example, Microsoft set passkeys as the default sign-in option for new consumer accounts last month, while Apple recently previewed updates to its Passwords app allowing the import and export of passkeys across its platforms.

No timeline was provided for when Instagram might support passkeys, and the timing for the wider rollout across Meta’s platforms remains unspecified.
