Gate News: In 2011, Clifton Collins received 6,000 Bitcoins, and some of these Bitcoins have recently attracted renewed attention. Recently, Arkham Intelligence intercepted a transaction transferring 500 Bitcoins to a new address, currently valued at approximately $35.5 million. This transfer involved 12 wallets linked to Collins, with a total holdings worth over $426 million, sparking widespread speculation about how the private keys were obtained.
At the time of Collins’s arrest, his belongings, including papers with private keys, were confiscated and discarded. However, the successful transfer of these 500 BTC suggests that some private keys or seed phrases have been recovered or stored elsewhere. Europol and Irish police collaborated to seize and unlock the wallet. An official statement said the Bitcoins were proceeds of crime but did not disclose specific cracking techniques.
Analysis suggests that the old wallet may have been protected by files, and law enforcement accessed permissions through wallet.dat or similar files. Another possibility is that Collins used a key generation service with security flaws, such as weak randomness, allowing private keys to be deduced. This method could apply to the remaining 11 wallets, and more Bitcoins may be transferred or disposed of in the future.
This operation demonstrates law enforcement’s increased ability to track and seize crypto assets and serves as a reminder for Bitcoin holders to strengthen private key security. In December 2025, Europol also seized a large amount of Bitcoin during a raid on Cryptomixer, indicating ongoing regulatory and law enforcement influence on the crypto market. Bitcoin prices and market liquidity could be indirectly affected by such events, and investors should be aware of potential risks from sovereignty and judicial actions.
