Gate News, April 14 — Amazon and Globalstar (a satellite communications company) announced a definitive merger agreement under which Amazon will acquire Globalstar. The acquisition will enable Amazon Leo (Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network) to add direct-to-device services and extend cellular coverage to areas unreachable by terrestrial networks.
The deal aims to expand Amazon Leo’s capabilities by integrating Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure, allowing the network to serve customers in remote locations where traditional ground-based networks are unavailable.
Separately, Amazon and Apple announced an agreement for Amazon Leo to provide satellite services for iPhone and Apple Watch, including emergency SOS messaging via satellite.
