Gate News message, April 20 — Sarvam AI, an Indian large language model (LLM) startup founded in 2023, is in talks to raise between $320 million and $350 million at a valuation of approximately $1.5 billion. The funding round includes contributions from Nvidia, Amazon, and HCLTech, which together are expected to invest $150 million to $200 million.
Other major investors include Glade Brook Capital ($20 million to $25 million), Bessemer Venture Partners ($50 million to $70 million), and Prosperity 7 Ventures ($40 million to $50 million). Existing backers Peak XV, Lightspeed, and Khosla Ventures are also expected to participate in the round.
Sarvam’s valuation is significantly supported by its selection by the Indian government as the national AI champion to build India’s sovereign large language model under the IndiaAI Mission. The company has received 4,096 Nvidia H100 GPUs at subsidized rates, the largest single allocation made by the mission to date. Founders Vivek Raghavan, who previously worked on India’s Aadhaar digital identity system, and Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of AI4Bharat, bring extensive experience in building AI solutions for Indian languages.
