Gate News message: NBC host Savannah Guthrie returned to the “TODAY” show early today, appearing in the studio wearing her iconic yellow dress, but her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing in Arizona, and the kidnappers are demanding a $6 million Bitcoin ransom. The disappearance has been 65 days, and the case remains unsolved; law enforcement has not arrested any related suspects.

In the early hours of January 31, a masked gunman broke into Nancy’s home. Her heart pacemaker was disconnected from her phone, and bloodstains matching Nancy’s DNA were found at the entrance to the house. The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office received nearly 40,000 tips, but progress has been limited. The only suspect arrested, Derrick Callella, has been confirmed through the investigation as having no connection to the actual kidnapping. The kidnappers sent a ransom letter to the media and attached a Bitcoin wallet address, but they have not taken any action so far. Doorbell camera footage shows the suspect is approximately 1.75 meters to 1.78 meters tall and has a black 25-liter backpack. The FBI is currently trying to extract more video evidence from other cameras.

When Savannah returned to the show, she said, “It’s so good to be home,” and revealed that her feelings of self-blame still linger, believing her mother’s ordeal may be related to her own fame. Her family and the FBI have offered rewards to find Nancy, but so far there has been no publicly confirmed suspect.

This case is a typical incident amid a surge in cryptocurrency-related kidnappings. Blockchain security firm CertiK shows that in 2025, more than 70 similar cases have been confirmed worldwide, up 75% from 2024, causing economic losses of more than $40 million. In the Guthrie case, the kidnappers chose Bitcoin as the method for paying the ransom, which is theoretically easier to trace, but it still has not resulted in any arrests. Savannah emphasized that for her mother, she will not let grief affect her day-to-day work, and she views returning to the show as part of her actions.
