A source told CNBC that the Senate Banking Committee will hold a hearing on April 16 to consider the nomination of Kevin Walsh for the position of chair of the Federal Reserve. A separate, ongoing criminal investigation related to the Federal Reserve is examining whether the current chair, Jerome Powell, made false statements to Congress regarding the costly renovation of the Fed’s office building. Although the Walsh nomination process is still underway, it could conflict with two parallel processes being advanced by the Trump administration. Senate Banking Committee member Tom Tillis said he will not vote to confirm Walsh until the investigation is complete, meaning Trump cannot advance both processes at the same time. Nevertheless, by continuing to insist on holding the hearing, Trump is clearly trying to achieve that goal. The Senate Banking Committee has not yet added the hearing to its public agenda.
