Trading activity has surged to its highest comparable level since the launch of the 1988 contract in October Fed funds futures, which investors used to bet on Wednesday's decision, data aggregated by agencies showed. Most of these new bets are bets that the Fed will cut interest rates by 50 basis points. The data shows a surge in related positions so far this week.  Subadra Rajappa, head of strategy at France Société Générale's United States Intrerest Rate, said this puts the market under great selling pressure amid a smaller Fed rate cut and Powell's message of graduality. "If the Fed had cut rates by 25 basis points instead of 50, the market reaction would have been much stronger," she said, "and the rhetoric of positioning, optimism, accommodative financial conditions, and so on could be tested." ”
