Popular Ethereum Layer 2 Starknet Faces Network Outage: Details

Starknet, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, is back online after a multi-hour outage that halted block production and transactions early on Tuesday. The downtime, which followed the deployment of the network’s Grinta upgrade (v0.14.0), was resolved by a chain reorganization that rolled back about one hour of network activity.

The team confirmed that transactions submitted between 2:23 a.m. and 4:36 a.m. UTC were not processed and will need to be resubmitted by users. The outage, while temporary, highlights the technical challenges of live upgrades and has led to a promise from the Starknet team for a full postmortem report detailing the cause and prevention steps.

Starknet has reported near-perfect network uptime in recent months, with the last major outage occurring in April 2024, when a bug led to a four-hour chain reorganization.

As an Ethereum Layer 2, Starknet uses zero-knowledge proofs to process faster, lower-cost transactions while inheriting the security of the Ethereum mainnet. Despite occasional disruptions, the protocol continues to gain traction among developers and users seeking a scalable and efficient solution for on-chain activity.
