IOTA Collaborates with Taiwan’s Government to Learn about Decentralized Identity (DID) from European Counterparts for Enhancing State Technology
Government institutions worldwide have been working on adopting decentralized identity solutions in order to provide greater security and protection for their citizens. The global semiconductor hub in Taiwan is now undertaking such projects and has been recently in talks with IOTA to discuss the implementation of decentralized ID solutions.
IOTA’s lead for Asia’s Eco – Kowei.tangle – was recently invited by Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs to discuss government collaboration case studies of IOTA. The workshop proved to be highly engaging, with my 45-minute presentation sparking a full hour of Q&A interaction, noted Kowei.
He also added that It’s evident that the Taiwan community holds a strong fondness for IOTA, as demonstrated by its active participation. Besides, Kowei said that he was surprised to see the expert behind TangleID and the Taipei Citizen Card in attendance.
With Taiwan’s government now becoming acquainted with DID through its European counterparts, Kowei is confident that numerous collaboration opportunities between IOTA and Taiwan will arise. Thus, he working on actively fostering partnerships to leverage these opportunities.
As said, IOTA is actively pursuing government collaborations. Earlier this year, IOTA was a participant in the Maldives Central Bank’s CBDC study tour. IOTA shared some important nuggets by educating about the benefits and challenges of implementing a CBDC.
At the event, the IOTA team outlined their perspective on how the platform could contribute to the implementation of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). They also emphasized the advantages of leveraging IOTA’s technology, such as its scalability, security, and cost-effective transaction fees. Furthermore, the team showcased the integration potential of IOTA’s platform with established financial s, illustrating how it could enhance user experiences seamlessly.
Europe’s Digital Identity Ambitions
Over the last year, the European Parliament has been working on building decentralized digital identity solutions for its citizens. The European Commission envisions that by 2030, Europeans will have the capability to access essential public services online, with an estimated 8 out of 10 Europeans using digital identity for service access once the program is fully implemented.
Initially proposed by the European Commission in June 2021, the Council, comprising government ministers from member countries, subsequently adopted its own iteration of a European digital identity wallet in December of the same year.
The European Union has already accelerated its work in building blockchain infrastructure across the entire EU bloc. In June 2023, the European Commission introduced the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC), aimed at expanding endeavors to compete with other extensive blockchain initiatives in the realm of digital infrastructure. The IOTA blockchain has shown a keen interest in participating in the EDIC initiative.
