The ETH community weekly 'Week in Ethereum' announced that it will stop updating, and the founder said it lacks a business model and foundation support

In the latest TechFlow news, on January 2nd, according to official sources, the ETH community weekly report ‘Week in Ethereum’ (WiE), which has been founded for nearly a decade, officially ceased publication on January 1, 2025. Founder Evan Van Ness revealed three main reasons for the cessation.

Foundation’s attitude shift: In early 2024, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) leadership expressed a lack of recognition for the value of WiE, subsequently providing only symbolic funding. When EF completely discontinued funding, WiE also ceased operations.

Business model dilemma: Van Ness said that advertising and sponsorship revenue is difficult to maintain. The marketing department generally does not pay much attention to marketing channels for developers, and it is difficult to achieve profitability due to its high requirements for content quality. He once rejected a sponsorship of 1000-2000 ETH provided by an ICO project in 2017 (the project founder was later arrested), which reflects his adherence to content quality and ethical standards.

Ecological values deviation: Van Ness supplemented on Twitter that there is a problem in the ETH ecosystem of “only focusing on code development and research, and neglecting other contributions”. Although hundreds of people hope to take over or obtain WiE for free, this actually proves the insufficient recognition of the ecological value of high-quality content.

WiE was one of the most important news sources for the Ethereum ecosystem at its peak, with a profound impact on the developer community. Many developers have told Van Ness at conferences that WiE has helped them establish their careers in Solidity development and security, and even influenced their decision to purchase ETH.

Van Ness finally said that although there are still institutions willing to acquire or fund WiE, he believes that this goes against the idea of public goods. “Life is short, I want to focus on meaningful things. It’s been a wonderful journey, but all good things come to an end.”
