Australian Police Warn of AI-Driven Crypto Investment Scams as Losses Hit $45M in 2026

According to the Australian Federal Police-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre, criminal networks are deploying AI to construct fraudulent investment schemes that have stolen over $45 million from Australian investors so far in 2026. The JPC3 noted that transnational syndicates are using AI to auto-generate counterfeit trading platforms, fake news articles, realistic landing pages, and automated chatbots to build credibility before soliciting larger deposits.

In a recent case, a woman in her 60s lost nearly $74,690 over 12 months after responding to a social media advertisement with an initial $174 USD deposit. Scammers gradually convinced her to transfer retirement superannuation funds, later demanding an additional $8,376 in fabricated administrative fees when she attempted withdrawal. The warning coincides with the launch of Clickfit, a national public safety campaign encouraging consumers to evaluate investment offers before transferring funds.
