Burmese Scam Networks Use ChatGPT, Gemini and Cryptocurrency for Automated Cross-Border Fraud

According to a leaked report from Burmese fraud centers cited by Hongxing News, scam networks are leveraging OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini for automated multilingual phishing and identity spoofing, with cryptocurrency payments enabling rapid cross-border fund transfers. The operations employ what researchers describe as an "AI acquisition plus crypto settlement" model, combining AI-generated social engineering with blockchain-based payment channels to achieve high automation and international scalability.

Starlink has emerged as the primary internet service provider for these Burmese fraud centers, with U.S.-based ISPs handling roughly one-fifth of the operations' traffic. OpenAI said fraudsters' use of ChatGPT mirrors legitimate user behavior and is difficult to detect, but added it removes approximately 100,000 suspicious accounts monthly through pattern recognition and risk controls. Google stated its AI models include safety guardrails and emphasized commitment to "responsible AI development" to prevent misuse in fraud and other illegal activities.
