Google DeepMind Warns AI Consciousness Disputes Could Become Political Conflict

According to Google DeepMind researchers, fundamental disagreements over whether AI systems are conscious could become a source of political and social conflict, according to a new study titled "Artificial Minds, Human Disagreement: The Political Challenge of AI Consciousness." Researchers Adam Bales and Iason Gabriel argue that society may never reach consensus on AI consciousness, even as the technology improves, as some people might develop emotional bonds with AI and ascribe consciousness, while others dismiss the idea entirely.

An April 2024 study published in Neuroscience of Consciousness found that 67% of participants believed ChatGPT could be conscious to some degree, though researchers remain divided on whether artificial consciousness is possible. The Google DeepMind paper proposes public deliberation, compromise, and mutual respect as ways to manage societal disagreement on this emerging issue.
