Google Rolls Out Android 17 with Delayed AI Features, Pixel Phones Get First Access

Google rolled out Android 17 operating system updates on Tuesday (June 16), with Pixel phones receiving first access and other Android devices to follow over the coming months. While the update introduces improvements in multitasking, security, and creator tools, major AI features remain pending until later this summer. The system includes new Bubbles functionality for floating app windows, Screen Reactions for recording screen content with selfie video overlay, enhanced privacy controls including one-time location permissions, and strengthened Lost Mode anti-theft features. Google's core Gemini Intelligence AI capabilities—including redesigned emoji, advanced voice input, AI-generated widgets, and multi-step task automation—are scheduled to roll out later this summer, arriving first on Pixel 11 series and select Samsung devices.
