According to Bloomberg, on June 12, Google filed a lawsuit against Outsider Enterprise, a China-based cybercrime network, for using AI to send 2.5 million scam texts to Android users over two weeks in May to steal personal information. The group coordinated on Telegram, impersonated Google and other brands, and used Gemini to write code for fraudulent websites.
Android users flagged 55,000 spam texts during the same period. Google linked the operation to 9,000 fake websites and over 1 million fraudulent URLs. The company coordinated with U.S. telecom operators AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon to block messages, and worked with U.S. law enforcement.
