Iran Claims Sea Strait Service Fee Collection is Legal on June 20, Says Not Bound by 1982 UN Convention

According to Iran's Students News Agency on June 20, Iran's Justice Ministry legal center official stated the country is not bound by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and therefore not subject to its transit passage rules. The official claimed that charging service fees for maritime passage is a recognized legal practice under international maritime law, provided the fees correspond to actual services rendered rather than constituting pure taxes or transit tolls.
