Japan's Government Encourages Yen Asset Rotation; GPIF Could Direct $75 Billion to Domestic Bonds

According to Royal Bank of Canada, Japan's government is encouraging investors to rotate toward yen assets, with GPIF currently maintaining 26.9% allocation to domestic bonds against a maximum 31% allowed under existing targets. Senior officials including the Prime Minister and Finance Minister have signaled support for asset rotation toward yen assets. The potential 4.1 percentage point increase in GPIF's domestic bond allocation would equate to approximately 12 trillion yen, or $75 billion in fund inflows.
