According to Bloomberg, Micron Technologies launched a major chip factory expansion project on Saturday in Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, with a total investment of approximately 1.5 trillion yen (about $93 billion). The new production line will focus on manufacturing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips optimized for AI computing applications.
The facility is scheduled to begin chip shipments as early as summer 2028. The Japanese government's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will provide financial subsidies of up to 500 billion yen to support the project.
