SemiAnalysis: AI Networks Need Both Copper and Optical on June 20, Not Either-Or

XCU0.72%

According to SemiAnalysis on June 20, copper and optical interconnect are complementary, not mutually exclusive solutions for AI infrastructure. Investors increasingly view the two as a binary choice subject to rotation, but the semiconductor research firm argues both will benefit as GPU cluster deployments scale.

Copper remains the preferred option where distance, power consumption, cost and reliability allow, while optical interconnect becomes necessary when bandwidth and distance exceed copper's limits. As GPU cluster complexity grows, both connection types should see sustained demand growth for data transmission between processors, switches, racks and clusters.
