Short-Seller Pami Qudir Targets South Korea's Undervalued Equities, Two-Thirds Below Book Value

According to the Wall Street Journal on July 19, activist investor Pami Qudir, known for his short-selling success against Valeant Pharmaceuticals and Wirecard, is shifting strategy to invest in South Korean companies. Based in London, Qudir is now scouting holdings across undervalued mid-cap stocks, hiring local staff, and establishing a Seoul office.

Qudir views the current environment as an opportune entry point, citing that two-thirds of KOSPI-listed companies trade below book value despite semiconductor gains. He is also leveraging South Korea's government-backed "Value-up" program, which incentivizes dividend expansion and share buybacks through tax benefits. His strategy focuses on improving corporate governance, strengthening board independence, and enhancing shareholder returns.
