U.S. Government Asks OpenAI to Stagger GPT-5.6 Release Through Preview Process

According to Reuters, the U.S. government has asked OpenAI to delay a broad release of GPT-5.6 and instead phase access through a preview process approved customer by customer, citing national security and cyber concerns. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman told staff the Trump administration requested the staggered rollout due to worries that frontier AI models could increase risks of automated cyber operations and deception if released too broadly. The Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Office of the National Cyber Director are reportedly involved in the request.
