U.S. Largest Power Grid Hits Record Peak Load of 162.7 GW on July 2 Amid Heat Wave

According to PJM Interconnection, on July 2, the U.S.'s largest power grid experienced a record peak electricity demand of 162.7 gigawatts between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. local time, as temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic region soared above 100°F (38°C). The grid operator indicated the figure may surpass the previous record of 165.563 GW set in August 2006, with official confirmation expected within 60 days.
