Taiwan's local micro-short drama MeowShort APP listing on IOS, artists Huang Guolun and Kou Naixin invest in original short dramas.

Recently, I often see people using their phones to watch online micro-dramas while taking the bus and the MRT, realizing that viewers’ viewing habits are changing rapidly. In the fast-paced daily life, many people can catch an episode during the one-minute commute, overturning the past imagination of watching series. Viewers are only interested in fixed themes, and the mass-produced micro-dramas are like instant noodles, ready to eat after soaking for three minutes. What is consumed is not important; both the taste and satisfaction are achieved.

A well-known movie critic on YouTube, 超粒方, mentioned in a post on Threads that during holidays, one can fast-forward through shows, sparking much discussion. Some agree, as modern people are always pressed for time, and fast-forwarding can save time. Opponents, however, believe that watching a show should involve fully experiencing the skills of the screenwriters, directors, and actors, and that one should watch the entire credits list of staff to consider it complete. A harsh reality is that more and more people indeed prefer short videos; the market is vast and the return on investment is high, so quick production and rapid delivery to the audience meet market demand.

Taiwan’s first short drama platform, MeowShort, has been launched on iOS and distributed by Mio Fanxing Media, and will successively launch a number of mini-drama series on mobile apps, and plans to launch 100 Taiwanese native mini-dramas this year. The idol short drama “Embracing You Through the Darkness” invested by artists Huang Guolun and Kou Naixin is an original production in Taiwan, hoping to encourage more young people to engage in creation. Huang Guolun said at the first short film drama summit in Taiwan that he hoped to invite martial arts to invite all walks of life to participate in the grand event and give young people the opportunity to dream.

MEOW SHORT platform leader Yvonne Chen stated that the scale of micro-short dramas in China has reached 6 billion USD, and the global market size is expected to reach 130 billion USD by 2027. The production time for short dramas is short, taking only 3 to 5 days to produce a short film, with costs and time far lower than film production. Micro-short dramas can also incorporate brand placements and advertising marketing, and manufacturers are generally interested in brand collaborations with micro-short dramas.

Andrew Hsu, COO of Miao Star, stated that the production cycle of micro short dramas is short, allowing for a higher leverage effect and greater return on investment. The micro short drama platform can generate profits from both subscribers and ad placements, with limitless market potential.

What is a micro short drama?

Micro-dramas have risen with the wave of TikTok short videos, with each episode lasting only 60 to 90 seconds, and a series can have dozens of episodes. They are mostly popular soap opera genres, including romantic love, campus youth, overbearing CEOs, supernatural time travel, and sadomasochistic love, which are all timeless tropes. The production of micro-drama videos is mostly in portrait format, to comply with mobile app screen specifications, hence they are also called portrait dramas. The market for micro-dramas is vast, with IP that can be adapted and supported in multiple languages, low production costs, and high advertising profits, making it an emerging blue ocean.
