Former Korean police officer sentenced to 6 years in prison and fined 100 million KRW for accepting cryptocurrency scam bribes

Gate News reports that on March 6, the Gaoyang Branch of the District Court of the Government of Seoul sentenced former police officer A for accepting bribes during an investigation into cryptocurrency scams. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison and fined 100 million Korean won. Between December 2023 and March 2024, A used his position overseeing investigations into cryptocurrency investment “teacher-led trading” scams and token sales fraud at the Seoul Police Agency to accept approximately 120 million Korean won in bribes, including 50 million won in cash and 70 million won in entertainment expenses. Additionally, A was prosecuted for claiming 7.88 million won in allowances through 80 false overtime claims. Legal service personnel B involved in the case was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, with a 4-year probation.
