Pudgy Penguin Pudgy World web game is now live! Playtest impressions: completely free of crypto, suitable for family fun

The Pudgy Penguin team has launched a free web-based game, “Pudgy World,” emphasizing a casual experience with no barriers to entry and deliberately hiding cryptocurrency elements. It offers a playtest of the crypto city, which is considered very suitable for family fun. Unlike traditional blockchain games, they first build the brand foundation with physical toys before launching the game.

Pudgy Penguins Launches Web Game Pudgy World, Paying Tribute to Penguin Club

Known affectionately in Chinese circles as “Fat Penguin,” the NFT brand Pudgy Penguins released the free web game “Pudgy World” yesterday (3/10). The gameplay experience is similar to regular games, with crypto elements intentionally hidden from users.

Pudgy World” was initially publicly released at the end of 2023. The current version allows players to explore a world called The Berg, which includes 12 unique towns. Players can experience story missions and play various mini-games.

Foreign media outlet CoinDesk pointed out that “Pudgy World” might remind some international players of Disney’s online game “Club Penguin,” which operated from 2005 to 2017 and peaked with over 200 million registered players. It was a platform where children could create penguin avatars and participate in the game.

Crypto City Playtest Experience: No Barriers, Perfect for Family Fun

The Crypto City editors personally played “Pudgy World” and were first asked if they were over 13 years old. They could quickly create a character and log in using Google or Apple accounts.

After entering the game, the system guides players through basic tutorials on fishing, moving, and jumping. Then, players receive a quest from Paxton Pengu to find Polly.

After about 10 minutes of experience, I believe “Pudgy World” is precisely targeted at children and teenagers as a casual game, making it highly suitable for family fun. The gameplay is almost entirely barrier-free; the only real barrier is that the interface is currently only in English, requiring some reading ability.

Additionally, the game screen contains no crypto or blockchain elements at all, and players can play directly without needing to hold NFTs beforehand.

Currently, the main revenue stream for “Pudgy World” is the in-game shop, where players can purchase game tokens Pebbles and shells with credit cards. However, Pebbles can also be earned through gameplay.

Pudgy World Launches, Token and NFT Prices Both Benefit

CoinDesk noted that many blockchain or NFT games launched in recent years often resemble crypto wallets with game features attached.

“Pudgy World,” on the other hand, adopts a completely opposite approach. It prioritizes creating a fully playable game first, then integrating token economics afterward. This user experience design deliberately breaks the traditional industry pattern.

While whether this strategy can successfully translate into user retention and actual revenue remains to be seen, on the day of its launch, the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem token $PENGU rose by 9%, and the floor price of Pudgy Penguins NFTs remained stable in ETH terms, benefiting from a 5% increase in ETH itself. The USD-denominated floor price also rose accordingly.

Long-term Benefits of Pudgy World Still to Be Seen, But Already Outperforming Peers

In the past few years, many blockchain games and NFT projects have been built around myths of quick riches but failed to truly attract players. Many games relying on token rewards to lure users mainly attracted short-term profit-seekers, ultimately ending in “mining and selling,” draining the game’s value.

The Pudgy Penguins team took a different approach, leveraging successful existing IP, initially building a large audience through physical toys, internet memes, and brand recognition, then launching game products to that audience. Before “Pudgy World,” they released a party game similar to Fall Guys called “Pudgy Party.”

Although a single game launch cannot fully prove the long-term effectiveness of this strategy, CoinDesk pointed out that simply releasing a game that feels like a real game and is completely different from DeFi interfaces already surpasses most blockchain games’ progress.

From Virtual to Physical: Creating Stable Cash Flow with Toys

Led by CEO Luca Netz, Pudgy Penguins continues to generate stable cash flow through physical retail channels.

Their physical toys are now available in over 3,100 Walmart stores and have partnerships with Amazon, Walgreens, and Target.

In the financial forecast for 2025, sales of Pudgy Penguins physical products have already exceeded $10 million, with total revenue expected to reach $50 million in 2025.

This operational model, where blockchain is kept behind the scenes, has successfully provided resilience and support for the Pudgy Penguins brand amid the NFT market downturn.
