Gate News message, April 23 — Tether announced it has supported the U.S. government in freezing over $344 million in USDT across two wallet addresses. The action was coordinated by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and U.S. law enforcement agencies to prevent further fund transfers. The addresses were identified as connected to illegal activities based on information provided by multiple U.S. enforcement agencies.
Tether maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward criminal activity conducted through its financial products, including USDT. The company works closely with over 340 global law enforcement agencies to identify and freeze assets linked to illegal activities or sanctions evasion. To date, Tether has supported over 2,300 cases worldwide, including more than 1,200 cases involving U.S. law enforcement, freezing a total of $4.4 billion in assets, of which $2.1 billion relates to U.S. enforcement actions. The company adheres to OFAC guidelines on Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) lists.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated: “USDT is not a safe haven for illegal activity. When there is credible evidence of connections to sanctioned entities or criminal networks, we act immediately. Recent events have shown what happens when platforms fail to act swiftly—enforcement fails, users are exposed, and trust is lost. We take a different approach, combining blockchain transparency, real-time monitoring, and direct coordination with law enforcement to prevent fund flows. As one of the largest issuers in the market, we take this responsibility seriously.”
The action is part of Tether’s broader cooperation with U.S. law enforcement. The U.S. Department of Justice has previously acknowledged Tether’s support in enforcement operations, confirming the company’s role in recovering approximately $61 million and $225 million in “pig butchering” fraud proceeds. These cases demonstrate that digital assets on public blockchains are not beyond reach when issuers and law enforcement agencies collaborate closely.
