Amazon Confirms Early-Stage Talks to Sell Trainium AI Chips, Stock Rises 3%

According to Barron's, Amazon confirmed on June 18 that it is in early-stage discussions with potential customers to sell its Trainium AI accelerator chips, marking a move to compete in the AI chip market currently dominated by Nvidia. AWS AI head Peter DeSantis stated the company has begun conversations with interested clients but declined to disclose specific customer names. Amazon's stock rose 3% on the news, while Nvidia controls over 80% of the AI accelerator market. JPMorgan estimates global AI accelerator capital expenditure will grow from over $300 billion in 2026 to $800 billion by 2030.
