BTC drops 0.47% in 15 minutes: Escalation in the US-Iran conflict triggers a split in safe-haven sentiment

From 12:30 to 12:45 (UTC) on July 23, 2026, BTC quickly dropped by 0.47% within 15 minutes. The price fell below the $65,100 level and traded in the $65,094.4–$65,421.0 USDT range, with an amplitude of 0.50%. The cumulative decline over 24 hours was 0.60%, and the current quote is $65,491.7. Trading is thin, with volume of only 119.6 BTC. Order book liquidity is extremely light: sells clearly outweigh buys, and the buy/sell depth ratio is just 0.46, indicating a mild correction in a low-volatility environment.

The main driver behind this move is the continued escalation of the U.S.-Iran military conflict. Starting on July 22 local time, the U.S. military carried out its 12th consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets, including maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, and air-defense assets. Geopolitical tensions have risen sharply. At the same time, Trump has publicly threatened to destroy an Iranian infrastructure site for every time Iran attacks ships in the Strait of Hormuz, further lifting expectations of confrontation. As geopolitical risk heats up, funds have noticeably shifted away: gold rose 0.91% to $4,117.74, while crude oil (WTI +2.82%, Brent +3.28%) surged in parallel. Traditional safe-haven assets benefited, while BTC, as a risk asset, faced pressure.

Second, expectations that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged at its July 28–29 meeting also weighed on BTC. Morgan Stanley predicts rates will remain in the 3.50%–3.75% range, and the high-rate environment remains unfavorable for non-yielding assets. Meanwhile, current order book depth is extremely shallow (the top 5 levels total less than 0.27 BTC). Around $65,491.7 there is a large sell wall (0.1086 BTC, accounting for 59.7% of the top 5 levels). With only light sell pressure, any sell-side imbalance gets amplified, creating a self-fulfilling short-term selloff.

The current market is in a choppy consolidation with no clear trend, and ADX across multiple timeframes is low (all below 16 except 4h), leaving direction unclear. Key to watch is the wording of the Fed’s July 28–29 FOMC meeting: if it turns hawkish, it may further suppress risk assets. If the U.S.-Iran conflict leads to escalation in disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a breakout in oil prices above $100 could trigger a broader selloff. Technically, focus on the $65,355 support level and the $65,000 psychological threshold; if those break, the correction may accelerate.
