The UK government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer has just announced a plan to require all citizens and residents wishing to work legally to have a Digital ID by 2029. This system will store personal information on mobile devices, promoted as a solution for immigration control and border protection.

However, the announcement has faced strong backlash from freedom advocacy organizations, the opposition, and public opinion, fearing that it could turn the UK into a “checkpoint society” with the risk of digital surveillance. Many opinions compare it to China's model of citizen control.

This event has also caught the attention of the crypto community. Economist Luke Gromen warns: “If you live in the UK and do not own BTC, perhaps now is the time to buy.” This perspective reflects the belief that Bitcoin could serve as a hedge against the government's expanding digital control.
