National Committee member Wang Jiangping: Open up more specialized data sets to empower industries with AI

DeepSeek’s explosive popularity has sparked a new wave of artificial intelligence craze in China. Recently, from local government systems to national-level applications, there have been announcements one after another about connecting to DeepSeek, with AI large models accelerating penetration into various industries.

If artificial intelligence is compared to a fast-moving vehicle, then without a doubt, data is the core ‘fuel’. The quality of data is crucial to the performance of the model, and a real issue is that ‘general-purpose datasets already exist, but specialized datasets still need to be enriched’.

On the afternoon of March 3rd, Wang Jiangping, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, shared his views on the development and application of AI in an interview with media such as Nandu. He believes that it is urgent to solve the problem of specialized data sets and calls on industry leaders, engineering institutes, universities, and research institutions to share more industry data sets openly.

Currently, AI technology is accelerating its integration into multiple industries, gradually impacting and changing people’s production and lifestyle. Wang Jiangping mentioned that AI’s landing applications in the medical industry are progressing rapidly, and breakthroughs may first come in the industrial sector, especially in some small industries - because the specialized data sets in these areas are easier to construct.

He told reporters from Nandu that the industry application of artificial intelligence is inseparable from strong and high-quality data support, and the finer the granularity of the data, the better. The speed of AI application landing depends on the quality and richness of specific professional data sets in the field.

It is worth mentioning that, in order to facilitate the entire society in finding data, the National Public Data Resource Registration Platform officially launched and operated on March 1st. On the first day of registration, a variety of national-level data such as medical insurance, meteorology, natural resources, etc., have been online on the platform, and Beijing, Tianjin, and other places have also carried out registration work based on the platform.

In Wang Jiangping’s view, the launch of this platform is of great value and significance, which can help enterprises find data here and promote the development and utilization of public data. However, when it comes to certain industries, he believes that more specialized data sets still need to be “supplied”.

However, due to considerations such as commercial secrets and data security, many data set owners are generally unwilling to open their data. In this regard, Wang Jiangping suggested exploring data sharing mechanisms, integrating data from industry-leading enterprises, engineering institutes, universities, and research institutions through reasonable business models, and allowing society to share the value of data.

In addition to professional data sets, the business model is also an issue that needs to be explored urgently. Wang Jiangping believes that the business models that can be considered for the application of artificial intelligence include: model hosting, model application services, data governance and trading, model evaluation testing, and the combination of AI and equipment manufacturing - AI smartphones, AI smart wearables, smart home, etc. also have development prospects.

The development of new technology is always accompanied by opportunities and challenges. AI may bring about the impact of employment shock, but it will also create more new positions. “Whether it’s individuals or enterprises, they must seize this opportunity and actively embrace AI,” said Wang Jiangping.
